Day One

We’re just getting acquainted. Let’s take a 10-minute walk to historic downtown Belmont and partake of a nice Merlot and a great steak at the Old Stone Steakhouse. Afterward, we can stroll downtown and see why the downtown enjoys 100% occupancy, with restaurants, shops and small businesses in abundance. During the summer, downtown Friday festivals, often with live music, are popular.

Day Two

It’s worth a day to visit 130-year-old Belmont Abbey, which is a mere five minutes away. The 600-acre tree-lined campus of this renowned Catholic College seems to beckon. The original art glass windows of the Basilica were designed by the Royal Bavarian Establishment of Francis Mayer and Company of Munich, Germany. They were included in a display which garnered four gold medals at the 1892 World Columbian Exposition.

Day Three

Another five-minute drive, and we’re at the 450-acre Stowe Botanical Gardens. Retired textile executive Daniel J. Stowe set aside the property and established the foundation, which developed the Garden, first opened to the public in 1999. If you still have time afterward, try the Belmont Historical Society, a brisk ten-minute walk from Belmont Reserve. The mill village house has been fully restored to its 1920s-era appearance.

Day Four

Let’s more fully explore Main Street, beginning with Farmer’s Hardware Store. Dinner awaits at the String Bean, Belmont’s first gourmet eatery, with fresh organic fare and a wide variety of beers and wines. Caravan, a notable coffee shop on Main Street, boasts an open mike on Thursday and Friday nights. Or enjoy morning joe with outside seating, any day.

Day Five

Let’s step things up. The U.S. Whitewater Center is a ten-minute drive. The Carolina Thread Trail, for bikes, horses and pedestrians, passes through this huge wooded area. In addition, you might be up to the challenge of the Class V rapids or the zipline course. You can get an après-raft bite to eat in the gourmet café. If you still have the energy, swing by the Belmont Drive-In Movie Theater. It’s one of the last remaining drive-ins in existence, and a great place to reminisce.

Day Six

All aboard! That stationary train in downtown Belmont is a reminder of the old town’s heritage as a railway crossroads. Originally known as Garibaldi Station, Belmont’s original depot dated back to the 1800s. Afterward, it’s time for an ice cream or hot chocolate at the ice cream stand at the Park.

Day Seven

Let’s go up a lazy river. The nearby Catawba is well known (and used) for fishing and boating. Amazingly, for a river so close to civilization, every bend seems like its own private cove and wildlife is common. Afterward, let’s hit one of the seasonal festivals – the Garibaldi festival in Spring, or the annual Autumn Festival or Halloween Bash, in downtown Belmont.
